What should we do first if a family member passes away at home?

There are different scenarios surrounding a death in the home. If it’s an expected death at home, the family doctor will provide paperwork prior that should be forwarded to the funeral home. Once the death occurs, the family can contact the funeral home to transfer their loved one. The funeral home is legally required to obtain verbal or written authorization from the executor or the next-of-kin before the transfer.

If it’s an unexpected death in the home, call 911 immediately. The coroner may come at the request of the police. The coroner will decide if further investigation is required, and whether to transfer to the funeral home or the hospital.

Death is one of the hardest topics for most people and this is why our Pre-planning advisors, trained professionals, are here to provide valued information to our community,  assist you to make your pre-arrangement, and to give you a peace of mind!
