Q: Is there any laws in BC regulating Funeral and Cemetery Services?
A: Yes, the funeral and cemetery services are governed in
BC under the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act (BPCPA), the
Cremation, Interment and Funeral Services Act, and the Cremation, Interment and Funeral Services Regulation. It includes the licensing of Funeral
providers, Funeral Directors, Embalmers, Crematorium Operators, and Cemeteries.
As a Non-profit organization, independent from BC government,
the Consumer Protection BC (used to name as Business Practices and Consumer Protection Authority) delivers
consumer protection services throughout BC and promotes fairness and
understanding in the marketplace.
It provides licensing services to the above professions;
inspects and ensures they are complying with the law; investigates alleged
violation and follows up with progressive enforcement action; responds to
inquiries and complaints; and educates community their rights and responsibilities.
